Register an Artwork

PLEASE REGISTER BY 28 FEBRUARY

Artworks registered after this date cannot be included in the gate handout or on the printed map. You are still welcome to bring an artwork, of course, and we encourage you to register so we can allocate a spot for your piece. If you have not registered by 28 February (or at all) you will need to find an art wrangler on site to place your piece.

READ THIS PAGE CAREFULLY BEFORE COMPLETING THE APPLICATION

Gather all the information required for the proposed piece.
Complete the form online, making sure you fill in each field. If a field is left blank the form will not submit.
Attach all relevant images and information. Attached files should be less than 1MB each. You can submit additional files by mailing them to art@afrikaburn.com, with the title of your piece clearly stated in the subject line.
CHECK YOUR MAILBOX AFTER SUBMITTING YOUR FORM. If you have not received a copy of your registration form, neither have we. Chances are you left a field incomplete and so your form did not submit. You’ll need to do it again.
Be sure to CHECK YOUR EMAIL regularly in the next few weeks. If we have questions or suggestions for you, we will email them through, and we’ll need you to answer them quickly.
Get cracking, there’s lots to do and it’s going to be fun!

IMPORTANT STUFF

Proposals need to be complete. The details are important. Incomplete proposals give us a whole lot of extra work to do. An incomplete proposal will definitely not be considered for a creative grant.
A minimum of one concept image is required. Please keep all file attachments under 1MB. We accept JPEG, GIF and TIFF files
Accepted file formats for other documents are PDF, MS WORD and MS EXCEL
If you are applying for significant funding for a large-scale sculptural or architectural artwork we will need to see a 3D model of the project. This may be a macquette, a digital image of the macquette, or a 3D digital rendering (eg in Sketch Up). Please email it through to art@afrikaburn.com with the title of your project clearly written in the subject line. Or contact us to set up a time to deliver it to our hq. While a 3D model is not a requirement for medium and small-scale projects, it is encouraged.

Please list all materials to be used in this project. Please consider them carefully. AfrikaBurn encourages the use of waste and salvaged materials, recyclable materials, environmentally friendly materials, and reusable materials. If you intend on burning your artwork please read up about what materials are acceptable. Some standard materials are extremely toxic when burnt.

25. Sound Component
Is there a sound element to your creation? If so, please describe what it is and what the impact will be on participants. Are you planning a party at your piece? We need to know so we can put you near the Loud zone.

26. Lighting Component
It’s important to light your piece. This protects it from accidental damage, and from accidentally damaging someone or something in the dark! It also means your artwork has a nightlife, adding to the Tankwa skyline. You can go all out with parcans and a generator, go green with solar power, go low-tech with candles, or anything in between. Please describe your light output devices and power sources.

27. Safety
It’s your responsibility to make sure your piece is safe for the good people of Tankwa Town. It may need to withstand extreme weather, including high winds. Make sure it is securely anchored, that it’s not going to fall over in a high wind, and no pieces will fall off. Please describe how you intend to anchor your piece.

32. Is it your intention to Burn your Artwork?
Please consider carefully whether it is important to the meaning of your piece to burn it. Burning necessitates particular construction materials and extra safety precautions. It also releases a significant amount of carbon into the environment. We encourage artists to create pieces that can live outside of Tankwa Town.

35. What are you using as a burn shield?
Fire leaves a burn scar. Think about how to shield the ground from the effects of the fire.
36. What are your burn plans?
Who will light the artwork? Are you planning a performance beforehand? Are there other participants involved?
37. What is your preferred burn date and time?
We’ll do our best to meet your request, but we can’t promise. There are safety considerations that affect the scheduling.
38. What is your estimated burn perimeter?
As a general guideline this should be at least 1.5 x the height of your structure.
39. How will you establish the burn perimeter?
For bigger perimeters it is useful to have something that demarcates the area.
40. How many crew do you have to help you hold the burn perimeter?
For smaller artworks you can have one on each side. For larger artworks allow for one fire marshall at least every 7m or so.
41. How many people will clean up your burn site the next morning?
It is your responsibility to remove all the burn debris left on your site, including ash and charcoal, nails, screws and staples. Please bring along a bag and any equipment needed to do so.
ALL BURNS MUST BE REGISTERED AND SCHEDULED SO THAT AFRIKABURN CAN PROVIDE A SAFETY OFFICER WHERE REQUIRED.
42. Where would you ideally like to install your Artwork?
Let us know your preference (e.g. inside the binnekring, on the outskirts, in the party zone, near your theme camp, at 5ish St, etc) We’ll try our best to accommodate this, but no promises!

It’s your responsibility to remove your creation from the AfrikaBurn location once the event is over, and to ensure that NO TRACE of it remains in Tankwa Town.

48. How many people will MOOP your artwork site and your campsite before you leave?
You need to remove everything from your artwork site, even ash and charcoal. Make sure all rebar has been removed from the ground and that you’ve picked up all screws, nails, staples, etc (you can borrow our magnet sweeper at the Creation Station)
